Michele Stockwell is the vice president of public policy for the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC). She also serves as the executive director of BPC’s Advocacy Network (BPCAN). Stockwell is a seasoned veteran of Capitol Hill having served for over 10 years in both the House and Senate at the top levels. Prior to joining BPC, Stockwell was policy director for U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), overseeing a policy team focused on setting and advancing the Majority’s congressional agenda. Previously, she worked as a senior policy advisor to Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT), spearheading major education reform legislation for the Senate New Democrat Coalition and staffing the conference committee on No Child Left Behind. In addition she was a legislative aide to former Congressman Dave McCurdy (D-OK) and led a task force of moderate and conservative Democrats in drafting legislation that was a precursor to the 1996 welfare reform legislation.
During her years with Senator Lieberman, Stockwell served as policy director for Joe Lieberman for President, shaping his presidential platform. In 2004, Stockwell joined the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI)—then affiliated with the Democratic Leadership Council, where she directed PPI’s family, social and education policies. At PPI, Stockwell commented frequently in national media outlets, including National Public Radio, Voice of America, and The Washington Times, and contributed to online journals and a nationally published higher education course book.
In 2009, Stockwell was selected by Washingtonian Magazine as one of their “100 most powerful women.” A native of Oklahoma, she has B.A. in political science and Spanish from the University of Kansas and a Master in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma.
