“Our Nation is at risk.” This stark pronouncement, issued by the National Commission on Excellence in Education nearly four decades ago, triggered a national anxiety about America’s competitive standing in the world. In 2019, the nation is still at risk. Children are not on equal footing as they enter kindergarten, and given the explosion of research on how children develop, it is time to widen the focus of the education policy discussion to include a child’s earliest years.
In 36 Years Later: A Nation Still at Risk, BPC updates the commission’s report, focusing on the importance of early learning to the success of the nation. Our October 3 webcast event will feature a panel of early childhood experts who will discuss the report, how positive early learning experiences can build a strong foundation for success, and how to move toward a public commitment to education that begins at birth.

Advance the conversation in your own community! Host a watch party with your community members and stakeholders, and lead a discussion on how your community can create a shared vision for young children starting at birth. For discussion guide materials, contact Sarah Tracey at [email protected].
