The just concluded 2008 NATO summit in
Bucharest is notable both for what it
achieved—invitation of Croatia and Albania to
NATO membership, NATO acceptance of a US
antimissile shield in Europe, and a continued
role for NATO troops in Afghanistan—and what it
did not—an offer of membership to Ukraine and
Georgia. These developments
have implications across a wide range of
important U.S. foreign policy
issues.
President Kwasniewski oversaw Poland’s
admission into NATO and the EU, the sending of
Polish troops to Afghanistan, and advocated for
democracy in Ukraine and
Georgia.
