Recommendations call for performance-driven transportation policy

Washington, D.C. - The National Transportation Policy Project (NTPP), a project of the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), will release its final report entitled "Performance Driven: A New Vision for U.S. Transportation Policy" on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. NTPP, led by its co-chairs former Mayor of Detroit Dennis Archer; former Congressman Sherwood Boehlert; former Senator Slade Gorton and former Congressman Martin Sabo, will issue its recommendations to Congress and the Administration at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, D.C.

NTPP's recommendations will create a thorough framework for the next transportation authorization bill, calling for U.S. transportation policy to be more performance-driven, with a clearly defined set of goals and more accountability. The recommendations call for improving the nation's infrastructure, focusing on economic growth, connectivity, improved access and energy and environmental goals.

A press conference featuring the four co-chairs will begin at 9:00AM. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), a founding co-chair of NTPP, will give a keynote address following the press conference at 9:30AM. Senator Warner was instrumental in the launch of the project, and stepped down from NTPP to pursue his bid for U.S. Senate in August 2008.

A panel discussion, beginning at 10:30AM, will focus on the report findings, and will be followed by a question and answer session with audience participation. Participants will include Congressman Thomas Petri (R-WI), member of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and NTPP project members Douglas Holtz-Eakin, President of DHE Consulting, LLC and former Congressional Budget Office Director, and Nancy Kete, Senior Fellow and Director of EMBARQ - The World Resources Institute Center for Sustainable Transport.

NTPP was launched with the goal of bringing fresh approaches to transportation policy and new voices to the debate. Its proposals for transportation reform aim to be bold and pragmatic with a more focused federal role.
