Washington, D.C. – Mike Erlandson, a member of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC) National Transportation Policy Project (NTPP) and Vice President of Government Affairs at SUPERVALU, one of the nation’s largest retailers, will address the Coalition for America’s Gateways & Trade Corridors Annual Meeting tomorrow, May 26, 2010, on Capitol Hill. Erlandson will outline NTPP’s support for a dedicated national freight program during the morning symposium at 8:45AM in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 106.
Erlandson will highlight the importance of well-performing freight networks and call for a strategic national freight policy with clear federal goals and outcome-oriented performance metrics, emphasizing NTPP’s recommendations for new mode-neutral formula and competitive programs. NTPP recognizes the importance of new revenue and proposes instituting a new mode-neutral freight fee to support a more viable, sustainable and effective freight program.
NTPP released its blueprint for surface transportation reform, “Performance Driven: A New Vision for U.S. Transportation Policy,” last June. Given the current fiscal condition of the federal government, the report presents a vision for future federal transportation policy that distributes limited funds in a way that rewards performance, innovation, and competition. NTPP is led by its co-chairs: former Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, former Senator Slade Gorton; former Congressman Martin Sabo; and former Mayor of Detroit Dennis Archer, and is composed of a broad, bipartisan coalition of transportation experts and business and civic leaders.
